Listen, O Dearly Beloved!

What follows is not a poem in the Arabic, but part of a chapter from the Kitab al-Tajalliyat. However, since it was translated in the form of a poem by Henry Corbin in Creative Imagination in the Sufism of Ibn ‘Arabi, it has become deservedly famous.

Listen, O dearly beloved!
I am the reality of the world.
the centre of the circumference,
I am the parts and the whole.
I am the will established between Heaven and Earth,
I have created perception in you only in order to be
the object of my perception.
If then you perceive Me, you perceive yourself.
But you cannot perceive Me through yourself.
It is through My eyes that you see Me and see yourself.
Through your eyes you cannot see Me.

I have shown myself to you so often and you have not seen Me.
I have made Myself fragrance so often,
And you have not smelled Me.
Savorous food, and you have not tasted Me.
Why can you not reach Me through the object you touch?
Or breathe Me through sweet perfumes?
Why do you not see Me?
Why do you not hear Me?

For you My delights surpass all other delights.
And the pleasure I procure you surpasses all other pleasures.
For you I am preferable to all other good things.
I am Beauty!
I am Grace!
Love Me.
Love Me alone!
Love yourself in Me, in Me alone.
Attach yourself to Me,
No one is more inward than I.
Others love you for their own sakes.
I love you for yourself.
And you, you flee from Me.

Dearly beloved!
You cannot treat Me, for if you approach Me,
it is because I have approached you.
I am nearer to you than yourself,
Than your soul, than your breath.
Who among creatures would treat you as I do?
I am jealous of you over you.
I want you to belong to no other, not even yourself.
Be mine, be for Me, as you are in Me,
though you are not even aware of it.

Dearly beloved!
Let us go toward Union.
And if we find the road that leads to separation,
we will destroy separation.
Let us go hand in hand.
Let us enter the presence of Truth.
Let it be our judge,
and imprint its seal upon our Union for ever.

Let Ocean Be Your Name Mother, My Queen of Misery

You couldn’t express your misery. Silently cried my dear mother. Gathering all miserables around. I became an ear for them. Come again my mother! Let Ocean be your name.

You were a prisoner of intensive care lately. Queen were your costume. A song for you with all my feelings. You liked English, didn’t you? Subject is the Love of melting with God (*) Says hallowed be thy name. I reply let Ocean be your name.

I wish you come here again. Try once more. This time as a whole woman a full-blown human. Oh my dear mother! I wish, ah it is all that wish. We lived a nice dialog recently. I am waiting you once again my beautiful mother. Let us stay cheek to cheek. Never separate again. Let Ocean be your name.

Hallowed Be Thy Name
I’m waiting in my cold cell when the bell begins to chime
Reflecting on my past life and it doesn’t have much time
‘Cause at 5 o’clock, they take me to the Gallows Pole
The sands of time for me are running low, yeah!
When the priest comes to read me the last rites
I take a look through the bars at the last sights
Of a world that has gone very wrong for me
Can it be that there’s some sort of error
Hard to stop the surmounting terror
Is it really the end, not some crazy dream?
Somebody please tell me that I’m dreaming
It’s not easy to stop from screaming
The words escape me when I try to speak
Tears flow, but why am I crying
After all I’m not afraid of dying
Don’t I believe that there never is an end
As the guards march me out to the courtyard
Somebody cries from a cell “God be with you”
If there’s a God then why has he let me go?
As I walk all my life drifts before me
And though the end is near I’m not sorry
Catch my soul, it’s willing to fly away
Mark my words, believe my soul lives on
Don’t worry now that I have gone
I’ve gone beyond to seek the truth
When you know that your time is close at hand
Maybe then you’ll begin to understand
Life down here is just a strange illusion
Yeah, hallowed be thy name
Yeah, hallowed by thy name
Yeah

A Rose From Your Garden 🌹

A Rose from Your Garden

May I pick a rose from your garden
And plant it in my heart?
So I can abide in this fragrance of yours
Even when we are apart

You asked us to take the name of Shiva
And plunge within
Oh to swim in this ocean of Love
How blessed we are

We can no longer hide this inner light
It’s shining oh so bright
The only thing burning in my chest
Is to rest, to rest forever

So may I pick a rose from your garden
And plant it in my heart?
So that a full garden can grow here
And we will never be apart

Laughter

What is laughter? What is laughter? It is God waking up! O it is God waking up!

It is the sun poking its sweet head out from behind a cloud you’ve been carrying too long, veiling your eyes and heart.

It is light breaking ground for a great structure that is your real body—called Truth.

It is happiness applauding itself and then taking flight to embrace everyone and everything in this world.

Laughter is the polestar held in the sky by our Beloved, who eternally says,

“Yes, dear ones, come this way, come this way toward Me and Love!

Come with your tender mouths moving and your beautiful tongues conducting songs

and with your movements—your magic movements of hands and feet and glands and cells—dancing!

Know that to God’s eye, all movement is a wondrous language, and music—such exquisite, wild music!”

O what is laughter, Hafiz? What is the precious love and laughter budding in our hearts?

It is the glorious sound of a soul waking up!

Rave-Worthy

RAVE-WORTHY

What is true enlightenment? It is knowing everything is rave-worthy,

but having the balance, the discernment, to withhold your applause at times, when there are

young souls near… or people trying to sleep.

A poem from Hafiz again. It is hard to translate above, please accept the following from page “May 3” of “A Year by Hafiz”.

STAND ALOOF

When a preacher stoops to scare tactics it is often wise to stand aloof,

for some gods may lose their patience and start to throw their shoes at him.

The Happy Virus

I caught the happy virus last night
When I was out singing beneath the stars.
It is remarkably contagious—
So kiss me.
